An Easy Arizona Birthday Party Idea That’s Actually Affordable

If you’re looking for an easy kids’ birthday party idea in Arizona that doesn’t require renting a venue, decorating for hours, or cleaning your house afterward, this has been one of my favorites.

We celebrated my son’s birthday two years in a row at the splash pad at Scottsdale Quarter, and after trying something different this year, I realized just how easy those birthdays really were.

The kids got to play, the adults could actually enjoy themselves, we went to lunch afterward, and best of all…there was basically no cleanup.

Why I Loved the Scottsdale Quarter Splash Pad

For us, the biggest thing was how simple it was.

We usually keep birthdays fairly small, with fewer than 10 kids including siblings. The splash pad at Scottsdale Quarter was perfect because it didn’t feel overwhelmingly big, and I found it much easier to keep an eye on everyone while the kids played.

It’s also shaded, which makes such a difference in Arizona.

Instead of setting up an entire party area, we’d bring a cooler with cold drinks, our cupcakes, a bag of little goodies for the kids and one birthday balloon.

The balloon wasn’t even really decoration…it was our little marker so everyone knew where to find us!

The kids would play at the splash pad and then we’d all head to lunch.

Simple.

Make Lunch Part of the Party

One year, we went to Grimaldi’s Pizzeria afterward and had a private room. Pizza after playing in the water was easy, everyone could find something they liked, and the adults got to sit down and enjoy lunch too.

Another year, we ate outside at Zinburger, which was just as easy.

I loved doing it this way because I wasn’t trying to serve an entire meal at the splash pad or carry a ton of food around. The splash pad was the activity, and the restaurant was the food.

And when lunch was over?

We went home. No house full of decorations or party mess waiting for us.

A Few Things I Learned

Arizona birthdays require a little strategy, especially when it’s hot.

Keep the cupcakes cold. I put the cupcakes inside a plastic bag and then kept them in the cooler. It helped protect them while keeping everything cool until we were ready for them.

Skip anything that can melt. If you’re making little goodie bags, toys are much easier than chocolate or other treats that aren’t going to survive the Arizona sun.

Bring plenty of cold drinks. We kept a cooler stocked for both the kids and adults.

Don’t overdecorate. Seriously, one balloon worked for us. Everyone could spot where the birthday group was sitting, the kids didn’t care about an elaborate setup, and I didn’t have to haul decorations back home.

Keep the group manageable. We typically had fewer than 10 kids, including siblings, and I think that’s part of what made these parties so enjoyable.

And of course, bring all the usual Arizona necessities…sunscreen, towels, swimsuits, water shoes if your kids like them, and a change of clothes for afterward.

The One Extra That Everyone LOVED

One year we decided to add Kona Ice, and it was probably the biggest hit of the party.

At the time, we paid around $100 for 30 snow cones. Prices can obviously change, but it felt like such a fun upgrade without turning the birthday into a huge event.

The truck came, everyone picked their snow cones, and both the kids and adults loved it.

If I were doing this birthday again, this is probably the one extra I’d splurge on.

Why I’d Choose This Over a Bigger Park Party

This year we celebrated at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, and while we had a great time, I realized afterward that the splash pad birthdays had been much easier for me.

At the train park, the kids naturally wanted to go in different directions, and I felt like I had to keep track of everyone much more closely.

At Scottsdale Quarter, everything felt more contained. The kids could splash and play while the adults stayed nearby, which made the birthday feel like something I could enjoy too instead of spending the entire time coordinating it.

That’s probably the biggest reason I’d do it again.

Sometimes the Easy Birthday Is the Best Birthday

I love making things special for my kids, but I’ve learned that special doesn’t always have to mean elaborate.

For these birthdays, we had water, cupcakes, one balloon, a few little goodies and lunch.

The kids had a blast. The adults got good food. I wasn’t stressed about entertaining everyone.

And when it was over, there was nothing waiting at home for me to clean up.

For an Arizona summer birthday, that’s pretty hard to beat.
